Vox Inferii, University of Nottingham’s first and only metal-based A Cappella group, adds the voices and screams of the underworld to the A Cappella Society, shaking up the scene. We are a non-competitive, auditioned group and allow any gender to join! However, you should be prepared to rock out during rehearsals and on stage during the A Cappella Society’s Winter and Spring concerts! We tend to perform genres such as nu-metal, to symphonic heavy metal, ’round to classic metal, a train journey to grunge and even dip our toes into pop-punk and slightly softer alternative rock!
The group started in 2023, with our first performance being the society’s Winter concert held in February 2024. We performed Nightwish’s “Wish I Had An Angel”, available to watch on our Youtube channel. Our rehearsals are usually twice a week, one being on Sundays 4-6pm and the other TBC at 6-8pm. They last two hours and are a good way to not only learn how to sing A Cappella with others, but also making life-long friends, jamming hard to metal and rock songs and learning how to read sheet music if you’re a novice at that! If you like metal and rock more than indie and pop, like A Cappella or want to try it out, and want less commitment than a competitive group but still want to perform, this group is tailored to all of the above. We even take suggestions and you can write sheet music for us to perform a song! It can be in any language you like.

How do our auditions work?
As we are a non-competitive auditioned group, we expect you to sign up for auditions for our group during the weekend of Fresher’s Week. It only lasts around 5-10 minutes and it’s nothing to worry about, it’s just like singing to a friend!
We start the audition by performing a range test, to give MDs an idea of what your voice part would be. It also serves as a warm-up! We would then ask you to perform a song of your choice: showcase your talents to us! Vox then has you try out a simple sight-reading activity. This lets us know whether you can or not. This doesn’t really affect if you get into our group, just tells us how we should write our sheet music and teach it. For more information on auditions and where to sign up, follow the link here
