Support and Inclusivity in Our A Cappella Society

Wellbeing Concerns

  • If you have any wellbeing concerns about yourself or a fellow society member, contact our Wellbeing Officer directly using the form below. Your message will go straight to them and no one else.
  • For any EDI (Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion) concerns, use the same form.
  • For concerns about someone who isn’t in our society, find more information here.

Support for our POC and International Members

  • While 63% of undergraduates are white at the University of Nottingham (according to the University’s EDI Student Data report from 2019/20), you’re not alone!
  • Many communities and cultural societies are here to support you.
  • The Black and Minority Ethnic Students’ Network provides a safe space to connect, discuss issues, and campaign for a better student experience.
  • If you have ideas for socials that celebrate different cultures, let our Social Sec or EDI Officer know!

Support for our LGBT members

  • Join societies and networks such as the LGBTQ+ Society, Queer People of Colour Society (QPOC), the LGBT Network, and the Trans Network.
  • Healthcare students can also check out LGBT+ Medics.
  • These groups are always welcoming new members and offer great support and community.

Support for our International members

  • Don’t miss the Globe Cafes – they’re great for meeting new people and getting involved in the community.
  • There’s also the International Students’ Officer and Network who you can talk to if you’re experiencing anything concerning or worrying.

Zero Tolerance Policy

  • The University of Nottingham Students’ Union has a zero-tolerance policy on discrimination, racism, and homophobia.
  • If you face any form of discrimination, reach out, and we’ll ensure you get the support you need.

Representation and Campaigning

  • For any representation or campaigning comments and concerns, contact UoNSU’s Liberation Officer or the BME Network.
  • There are many cultural societies to join and get involved with.

We’re all here to make sure everyone has a great time in our A Cappella Society, so never hesitate to reach out if you need anything!

Financial Wellbeing

We understand that participating in A Cappella can sometimes be costly, especially with trips and events that may exceed £100. If you’re concerned about expenses, please reach out to your group representative or group leader. They can help organise fundraising activities, such as gigs or busking, to make it easier for everyone to participate. Your group funds can be used to reduce costs for trips, stash, and other expenses. Fundraising is a shared effort, and your group leaders are there to help coordinate these activities.

Remember, A Cappella is all about having fun and enjoying music together. You should never feel pressured to participate in any activities. If you do, please inform a committee member or the Student Groups Team at [email protected], or the SU advice team at [email protected].

If you’re having difficulty affording trips, please speak to our Welfare Officer, SU Advice, or the Student Groups Team. They are here to support you and can discuss options to help manage costs. In some cases, the society may have limited funds available to assist members who continue to face financial challenges despite fundraising and other support.

Your wellbeing is our priority, and we’re here to ensure everyone can enjoy their time in the A Cappella Society.

Complaints

We want our members to feel supported and happy. However, from time to time, things do go wrong, and you may feel you wish to complain. If you have any complaints, whatsoever, you must refer this to the SU or the University. While committee can support you, we cannot resolve complaints.

The SU have a complaints policy in line with the SU’s Articles of Association and its legal responsibilities. For more information, find out more here.

Trips and Socials

  • A trip is any group activity outside of campus that’s related to the society.
  • This can range from nearby locations like Leicestershire to distant places like Australia!
  • All trips, events, and socials must be reported to the committee through the trip form that your group rep will have access to.
  • Some trips also need to be reported to the Students’ Union for insurance and compliance regulations. Committee will do this for you.
  • Every trip will have an emergency contact, a trip form, a budget form, a participant list and a risk assessment, completed by your group representative or MD.
  • During the trip, if there’s an issue, speak to your designated emergency contact.
  • If there’s a wellbeing or EDI issue on a trip, feel free to speak to our wellbeing or EDI officer.
